Tuscany Coastal Towns: Marina di Grosseto

In the heart of Maremma in Tuscany, surrounded by a refreshing pine forest and guarded by an ancient watchtower, Marina di Grosseto is a popular seaside resort town overlooking the Tyrrhenian Sea. It provides all city services and the tranquility of a country town. This is a nice tourist destination with multiple attractions: kilometers of large beaches, a vast pine forest, natural parks, historical and archaeological sites, and the hills just few kilometers inland. It is the ideal for a tranquil vacation.
Unlike almost all Italian cities, Marina di Grosseto boasts a precise birth date: the year 1793. This is the year when the tower of St. Rocco was completed, built by the Grand Duke of Tuscany in defense of that stretch of coastline. For over a century the massive tower stood there alone on the beach, accompanied only by a few fishermen’s huts. Things started to change after the First World War when the coast began to be frequented by tourists from Grosseto. They built rudimentary houses, little more than shacks. In 1932 Marina di Grosseto was officially established. Its development experienced a massive acceleration in the 1960s coinciding with the so called economic boom, which transformed the village into an almost self-sufficient holidays citadel.
The flagship of Marina di Grosseto certainly is its long and uninterrupted sandy beach, served by a number of modern and equipped bathing establishments. Since 1999 the town has been awarded with the prestigious European Blue Flag. Its wide beach, ideal for children and to spend days of rest and fun, gives the opportunity to practice all typical water sports.
A stretch of coast is also dedicated to dogs. All dog owners will be able to bring their four-pawed best friends at the “beach Bau” in Le Marze.
Behind the town and the beach the wonderful Tombolo pine wood stretches for miles. This is the ideal place for pleasant refreshing strolls, walking, cycling, or horseback riding. Here you will find a typical lush Mediterranean environment with the picturesque natural reserve of the Diaccia Batrona marshes, the last stretch of what once used to be vast wetlands.
The variety of the territory mimics the variety of the tasty Maremma cuisine. This land has ancient hunting traditions. Several recipes are based on wild boar, hare and pheasant. It also keeps a strong culture of the sea and fishing, while the countryside gives wonderful wines and olive oil.
Marina di Grosseto is also the ideal starting point for many excursions and walks. Rich archaeological sites, including the Archaeological Park of Roselle (Etruscan and Roman) and the necropolis of Vetulonia are a fascinating site. Finally, the tourist port of Marina S. Rocco is the ideal departure point to reach the nearby islands of the Tuscan Archipelago National Park: Elba, Capraia, Gorgona, Pianosa, Montecristo, Giglio and Giannutri.
