Tuscany Coastal Towns: Castiglione della Pescaia

Castiglione della Pescaia is a beautiful Tuscany coastal town overlooking the sea below from its castle. Within its ancient walls you can still admire feel all the medieval charm. Its famous beaches satisfy all tastes: modern beach resorts where one can rest sunbathing, renting boats, kite surfing or taking a diving course.
Summer evenings offer many entertainment occasions with typical restaurants where you can eat the genuine Maremma cuisine, wine bars where to taste all the great wines from Tuscany and a series of excellent ice cream places to taste the authentic Italian gelato! Castiglione della Pescaia also offers late night fun with clubs, discos, pubs and beach parties to make everyone happy!

The history of this town is certainly not recent. This Tuscany coastal town is of Roman origins. The medieval town grew around the castle on the top of the hill, while the modern part was built along the coast. In the Tenth century it became part of the domain of Pisa and this is when the first large tower on the highest point of the hill was built. It was only later that the walls around the town, reinforced by towers and turrets, were built. Alfoso of Aragon possessed the castle since 1447, and transformed it into a real castle manor. Many families owned the castle in succession. The Piccolomini were succeeded by the Medici, then the Lorraine, until the coming of the Kingdom of Italy when the castle became a public property and was abandoned to itself. It is currently privately owned.
Castiglione della Pescaia, like any other coastal towns in Tuscany, until the 1930s was mainly an industrial site, where the beach was used only for primitive forms of fishing. The beginning of the tourist era that saw the beach employed for recreational purposes changed between the two World Wars, and it could be related to the new summer vacation concept of Nineteenth century. The beaches are equipped with all the comforts, and provide an exclusive spot where to enjoy a meal at a restaurant by the sea, even at lunch time. Games and entertainment for children are provided, while sports can be practiced with or without instructors.
In addition Castiglione della Pescaia offers a varied natural environment. The sea is of course the predominant natural element. The many kinds of beaches and sea bottoms in such a short stretch of coast offer much to scuba divers and snorkelers. The pine wood frames the beach offering a fresh resting spot where the air is naturally scented. The top of the hill where Castiglione della Pescaia rests is covered with lush Mediterranean plants that with their green colors contrast the blue of the sea for a wonderful view. Among the many Tuscany coastal towns this one is one of the most magical ones.
