With spring time here comes the time of traditional festivals in the beautiful region of Tuscany. Many are the appointments for the month of April and, for those who decide to combine a vacation to discover a land rich of art and beautiful scenery, it will also be a journey of flavors and Tuscan specialties.
The first weekend of the month is dedicated to gluttony with the festival of frittelle (rice pancakes) in San Donato in Collina, near Rignano sull’Arno, where you can taste the delicious cakes of rice accompanied by classical Vinsanto made locally. On April 5th in Montagnana, a fraction of Montespertoli, there will also be delicious frittelle. The new wine, or the “novello” is the center of attention on Sunday the 7th at Casalguidi, in the province of Pistoia, with the festival organized by Proloco and the City of Serravalle and that will also see the presence of the market of typical local products.
The Easter Schiacciata is served near Pisa, in Ponte a Egola on Saturday April 4: beginning at 8PM a delicious dinner with typical dishes of Tuscan cooking will be served, while on Sunday the flea market will give space to crafts and the Easter Schiacciata, a sweet typical of poor peasant cuisine of the area of Pisa. In the beautiful land of Mugello it is time for the Fair of Figs, scheduled for Sunday April 5 at Vicchio, while in the beautiful setting of Rio d’Elba it will be the turn of Schiaccia briaca (drunk schiacciata) scheduled for April 11th.
In Santa Luce during the period April 15 to 17 there will be food stands with excellent wines form the Pisan hills and a fair where you can enjoy the best grilled meats and seasonal vegetables.
At Ronta in Mugello you will find the Festival of Wild Boar on the 18th and 19th of April and on the 25th and 26th of April. Here you can enjoy the goodness of local specialties such as the tortelli of Mugello and at the boar pasta sauce.
Near Siena on Sunday April 19, in the village of Rigomagno near Sinalunga, it will be Ciambellano Fair with delicate sweets, while colors and flavors will be exploding in Grosseto during the Festa di Primavera, or Spring Day, during the days of Friday 17th, Saturday 18th and Sunday 19th of April. Finally, in the village of San Miniato on April 25th it will be the time for fresh fava beans in the pod for lunch and dinner with entertainments.
That of Tuscan festivals and fairs is a route that will take you to the discover of little known corners of a surprising and eclectic territory, a route kissed by the colors and scents of spring.
