Thrifty Restaurant in Arezzo

Mariano is a large man. On slow days he sits behind the restaurant counter to check his emails and catch up with his Facebook contacts. He loves to have friends. You can tell from the smile on his face when he greets you. If good food and a happy humor go well together, Mariano is living proof of it.

But you should not imagine his restaurant to be like one in those Mafia flicks, where you have big guys sitting in a corner with garlic hanging from the ceiling, all sorts of paraphernalia on the walls, and red and white checkers tablecloths. His restaurant is a sleek and classy one, without being posh. His cuisine is elaborate and tasty. Prices are not on the low side either.

But there are two days of the week when Mariano becomes a very inexpensive place to eat, without loosing its great taste. On Wednesdays it is “Brace Around” time. He did call this evening like that because if you love barbecued meat this is the night for you. At just 15 Euros per person you can eat all the barbecued meet you want, have one serious drink (beer, wine and the likes, not just water) and service. All else is paid as usual. But I promise, portions are abundant, and the server comes around very often.
Thursdays is the “Pizza a Sbafo” night. “A sbafo” means to have a free ride. Well this is not free, but almost. For just 10 Euros per person you can have all the pizza you want, cut up for you and served in quarters, and a drink. Their beer is really good. Pizzas are very tasty and rich. It is the flat Italian pizza, so if you are more of a Pizza Hut person, maybe this is not for you. But again, Pizza Hut does not even stand a chance in Italy. I forgot, service is also included.

Mariano also has lunch time offers at 15 Euros per person, with two first course and second course tastings, a drink and service all included.
After such a large eating you won’t probably find space for anything else, but if you do, try the delicious desserts. The Catalan pudding arrives flaming and you have to let it burn the sugar before tasting its deliciousness.

Mariano is closed on Tuesdays and can be found in the heart of Arezzo in Borgo Santa Croce 10. To reserve call +39 0575 080722. Email ristorantemariano@libero.it
