Squares of Tuscany

lucca-squareThese are the ten crown jewels of Tuscany, cities with an immense cultural heritage that in their historical centers hide the finest squares of Italy. Once, squares represented a point of referral for political, religious, commercial and artistic power. Here we can still find traces of the glorious past of each city. In the square you can find the most important monuments that signed the glory and wealth of that particular town. The square has been, and occasionally still is, a prominent stage for ancient traditions that revive at regular intervals; most importantly they have been and still are a place of leisure and relaxation where to enjoy breathtaking views.

Florence, the cradle of Renaissance. The city is abundant in squares that are famous throughout the world. The foremost two, however, are the Piazza del Duomo, hosting the Cathedral of Santa Maria del Fiore and the Baptistery, and of course the Piazza della Signoria, where the imposing Palazzo Vecchio rises to the sky.
Piazza del Campo in Siena, is unique with its shell shape. Here in addition to admiring the beautiful medieval buildings that wall the square including the Palazzo del Mangia, you can attend to one of the most famous events in the world, the Palio of Siena, where the districts of the town race against each other with their powerful horses.
A must see is of course the Piazza dei Miracoli in Pisa, or Miracle Square, that entangle your attention with the beauty and grandeur of the cathedral, the baptistery and the world-famous Leaning Tower.
The most peculiar is the Piazza Anfiteatro in Lucca, that presents an elliptical shape because it was built above the remains of the ancient Roman amphitheater.
To enjoy the most beautiful sight of the Tyrrhenian Sea in all its glory you should step on the celebrated Terrazza Mascagni in Livorno or in Piombino on Piazza Bovio. These stylish terraces are the fine ending of pleasurable promenade along the shore.
Montepulciano offers the possibility to feel like being in a movie. Its historical center and Piazza Grande have been the setting of many movies, where the last in line is the New Moon movie shot few months ago.
In Vinci, to celebrate a great genius, is the Piazza for Leonardo by Mimmo Paladino.
Do not forget to visit the central squares of Prato, Grosseto, Massa and Pistoia: here are their cathedrals and their precious historic buildings.
