The 2009 edition of the Lucca Jazz Donna (Lucca Jazz Woman) is greatly awaited. This will be the fifth edition of this festival dedicated to women in jazz. This year’s edition is dedicated to Billy Holiday, as 2009 is the 50th anniversary of her death.
The festival starts on February 19th at 9:15PM at the Centrale cinema where the movie “Billie Holiday – The long Night of Lady Day” will be shown. On Saturday 21st starts the main program of concerts in the San Girolamo theater in the historic center of Lucca.
Lucca has a strong jazz tradition. The 2009 edition aims at exalting the great women of jazz and their voice as an instrument. The woman singer of jazz is at the center of the scene, and Billy Holiday is one of the greatest interpreters of such figure.
The artists of the festival are coming from all over Italy and from the international scene. One of them is Tiziana Ghiglione, the first lady of Italian jazz. Considered the queen of scat, she is the best at improvisation. She will sing on the 28th, and on the same date Ada Montellanico will perform. Her last album is dedicated to Billy Holiday.
