Just few days ago I’ve been in Arezzo with my Tuscan friends and spent a great night at the Cocoa pub.
The nightlife of Arezzo is one of the best in Tuscany, and I am sure all that have been there can confirm that. Arezzo is populated by heavy spending young kids, therefore everyplace is full of people almost everyday of the week, but fortunately it is not expensive to drink (a pint of beer goes for 4 Euros and cocktail for 6, average) or to eat.
The Cocoa pub gets its name from the chocolate master that sits right next door and that lent half of the former chocolate laboratory to the pub, which used it to carve out a very versatile entertainment environment.
During the day the pub also offers coffee shop services with delicious pastries from the chocolate shop in a very romantic environment that seems to come out from a story of Ercule Poirot. The shelves and the oven as well as the counter are those of an old chocolate shop, where the sitting area is furnished as a floral gazebo with liberty tables. At night this environment becomes the pizza shop, where delicious pizzas are prepared without stealing the scene to the cocoa shop ambient.
Just a set of stairs bring you to the tavern on the first floor. Here long wood tables and beer host about a hundred people at a pinch, serving delicious traditional Tuscan food from the kitchen, pizza from downstairs, draft and bottled beer and cocktails.
So my friends brought me to the Oasis pub to dinner, and I had the best pizza, while they ate tagliata steak and pici. I can’t eat that much food! I thought that afterward we were going to leave to go to some place in Arezzo center, but then I noticed that the stage for live music was being set up, so the scene was becoming more interesting.
At about 11 PM the dinner was over and the fun begun! After few Italian and international music, the karaoke was set up, with a huge screen on the wall to make it possible for everyone to read the words. So the microphone started going around and while few revealed themselves great singers, many were just plain bad, but didn’t care a bit and everyone sang along and no one felt embarrassed.
People in Arezzo are the least self-conscious of all Tuscan people, and they have great fun when they go out, being very warm and friendly, while at the same time they can be rude with you as they consider you a peer and do not patronize nor judge you in any way.
Without me not even realizing, we stayed there singing along with everyone else until 3 AM, to my amazement as I am really shy and hate to sing in public (as I am not that attuned at all!!)
So jot down the Cocoa pub in you list of places where to go when in Tuscany, as there you will have fun for sure!
