Festival Jazz and Wine in Montalcino

jazz_montalcinoThe “Jazz & Wine in Montalcino” festival is now at its twelfth edition and represents one of the most prestigious jazz music events of the nation. The festival was founded in 1998 with the help of Castello Banfi, the famous winery of Montalcino that is deeply bound to the territory and its traditions, and the cultural association “Jazz & Image” of Rome and the Municipality of Montalcino. As usual, this year’s program is rich and varied, spacing on different musical languages, as many as the different interpretations of Jazz can be.

On Wednesday July 15 the opening concert will be held within the suggestive walls of Castello Banfi and will have the Trio di Salerno – Guglielmi, Deidda, Vigorito – as protagonist. This is a new and unusual trio, consisting of sax, piano and bass.
From July 16 onwards the festival will be held at the beautiful Fourteenth-century Fortezza di Montalcino. On this date the multifaceted Gege Telesforo and his Master Groove Quintet will propose a brilliant synthesis of funk, swing and be-bop held together by the typical Sixties blue note sound.
On Friday July 17 one of the greatest saxophonists in the business, David Liebman and his quartet will play on the stage of Montalcino.
The first week of concerts will end with Gary Smulyan & Riccardo Fassi Quartet, who will perform Saturday July 18 with the absolutely unique and personal sound of the sax by Gary Smulyan jamming with the great creativity of Riccardo Fassi at the piano.
On Sunday July 19, the great pianist Cedar Walton plays his funky and melodic hard bop music.
The second week of concerts opens up with the José Luis Gutiérrez Quartet that on Thursday July 23 will be playing an innovative sound, a fusion of jazz and free expression traditional Iberian music, and entrance is free.
On July 24 it will be the turn of the swinging sax of Ray Gelato and his latest work, which is a tribute to all his musical heroes.
The concert of July 25 is the closure appointment of this jazz festival with Al Foster, the great drummer who for many years worked with Miles Davis.
This jazz festival in Tuscany is not to be missed. For the twelfth consecutive year the two intimate pleasures of jazz and great quality wine such as Brunello di Montalcino are celebrated through the growing success of this event.

Concerts start at 9:45PMtickets are 10 to 13 euros (the concert on July 23 is free) – Advance pre-sale through Proloco Montalcino.
