Cortona Restaurants: Fufluns

cortona_restaurants_fuflunsAmong the many Cortona restaurants that you can find in this little Tuscan Jewel, there one I spotted out for you: Fufluns! It sounds like someone is falling on stairs, doesn’t it?

This fairish name (that many of you may think has Irish roots) actually is very Tuscan as it is the name of an ancient Etruscan god, and precisely the god of green vegetation and new life. He was supposed to be found in all green vegetation things and was worshiped to bring prosperity. From his name the town of Populonia (Pupluna or Fufluna) got its name. The Romans worshiped him for awhile, but then forgot about him…until nowadays!

Yes, because Fufluns among all the Cortona restaurants (and many other Tuscan restaurants) surpassed my expectations by far! As the name suggests, the food really is divine.

But first let me describe the ambient. A typical Tuscan restaurant at first sight. Beautiful red brick arches and wooden-pillar ceilings, antique Tuscan furniture, and wooden tables with nice table cloths. After a few steps inside the restaurant you start noticing many details that could be in someone’s home, not in a restaurant, like the old table calculator, or the shelves with fine decorative china. The lighting is also very warm and welcoming, making each table very private. Stepping in the second room is like entering the room of a professional photographer. On the walls are many framed shots of colorful subjects, conveying a sense of clashing modern and classic Tuscan styles. Very refreshing yet intimate.

cortona_restaurantsOk, to the food now! If you are looking for an excellent one among all the Cortona restaurants this is the one. Among the many first courses (I skipped the appetizers, although the Antipasto Fufluns seemed delicious) those worth noticing are the Gnocchi with pistachio and cheese, and the “caramelle”, or candies, with smoked cheese, tomatoes and fresh cream. The caramelle are filled pasta that resembles a wrapped candy with a spinach and ricotta filling.

The second course to get is the scaloppina with portabella mushrooms, a very tender veal steak. Also the pizzas are great! I got the one with tomato, scamorza, red radicchio and mozzarella, while my friend got one with tomatoes, mascarpone cheese, mozzarella and pine nuts. Both delicious.

Finally the desserts! I could not do without a chocolate filled, covered, sprinkled warm tart that literally melted in my mouth! Oh by the way, I had a beer, a nice tall weisse with a thick head and grassy taste. Sweet!

The address of Fufluns is Via Ghibellina 3 in Cortona. Closed on Tuesdays. The website in Italian and English is Cortona Restaurants Fufluns.
The phone number is +39 0575 604140
