This is a biking itinerary of great charm, in the heart of scenic lands famous for the Brunello wine.
This itinerary is quite short since after the first portion made of gentle ups and downs on a dirt road for about 7 kilometers, from Sant’Angelo in Colle starts the hard part. The climb up to the Passo del Lume Spento, the last difficulty to be overcome: for someone averagely fit this route presents no difficulty.
Before departing from Castelnuovo dell’ Abate, it is certainly worth a visit at the beautiful Abbey of Saint Antimo. When you are ready to leave, take the dirt road that leads to Sant’Angelo in Colle through a gentle up and down. After 7 kilometers accompanied by the underlying views of the Val d’Orcia with its cypress trees and vineyards you reach the paved road where you need to turn left to reach the nearby Sant’Angelo in Colle.
From here you go uphill towards Montalcino pedaling along a short stretch of road from the first part of the itinerary. After about 5 kilometers of continuous uphill you will reach the pass of the Lume Spento in locality Ragnaie before descending again towards Montalcino. Once arrived in the capital of Brunello wine the ride is no longer any difficult. From this moment on you do not need to pedal anymore for the 9 kilometers that lay ahead. The road is a constant downhill along beautiful vineyards on both sides, leading down to the Abbey of St. Antimo and Castelnuovo dell’ Abate.
