Bagnone Castle Near Massa

bagnonecastleThe Bagnone Castle is dominated by an imposing cylindrical stone tower, topped by corbels and a dropping system with wider framed holes for archers.
The location is an element that suggests the protective functions of the castle. In order to protect the valley, Bagnone was built as a stronghold, giving rise to his castle with the warning and communication towers. The communication would travel to the other castles like Mulazzo, Malgrate, Castiglione, and Treschietto, during the period around the 10th century. Bagnone castle, together with others forts, was certainly important for the defense of territory, not easy to access from the valley, due to the deep creek that did not allow any entry if not through some stone bridge which somewhat facilitated the defense task.
The tower is the only surviving structure of the castle, now completely disappeared and partly incorporated in smaller buildings of the Ruschi-Noceti family villa. The villa was raised on old preexisting structures from the 16th century, largely transformed during the Nineteenth century and to which was added a bright, imposing portico dating back to the early years of the last century. The medieval structure of the primitive village is perfectly preserved. It is divided into semi circular rings that degrade toward the bottom of the valley. At the first ring, near the the boundary walls of the villa, is still standing the church of San Nicola, where a wooden pulpit dating to the Thirteenth century can be admired. The castle is a private property and cannot be visited.
